RIDING ESTABLISHMENTS ACTS 1964 & 1970

Riding establishments

Any person running a horse riding school or who hires horses, ponies or donkeys for rides in Southwark must be licensed by Southwark Council.

Premises and stables will be inspected by a licensing officer and horses are subject to inspection by a veterinary officer.

Fees

For information on fees, go to our licensing fees page.

Please ensure that the cheque or postal order is made payable to London Borough of Southwark and submitted along with the completed application form.

Conditions of licence

The term 'horse' includes any mare, gelding, pony, foal, colt, filly or stallion and also any ass, mule or jennet.

  • Licenses can be granted to either a business or an individual aged over 18
  • The horse riding establishment must never be left in the charge of anyone under 16
  • Horses let out for riding hire or for instruction must always be supervised by a responsible person aged 16 or over. The only exception to this is if the holder of the licence is satisfied that the hirer of the horse is competent to ride without supervision
  • A licence is valid from either the date of issue or from January 1. Please state your preference on the application form
